Websites

How often do you check the AADE or the KCRADE website? Do you have a favorite feature? What suggestions would you make for improvements?

I'll share my thoughts on a later blog.

Call for volunteers

Do you want to help on a committee?

Can you help to audit the treasurer's book?

Do you want to be one of the greeters at the general meeting -- it's a great way to get to know the other members of the group.

Have you joined a Speciality Group in AADE and would like to report on their activities -- maybe write an article for the Challenger?

Write an article for the Challenger to share what's happening in your area of diabetes management... finding new ways to motivate? involved in any research?

Whatever your interests, we would like to encourage you to take an active role in the KCRADE association. Just let us know and we'll help you get started.

Leadership Conference

I hope you will nominate yourself to be the next KCRADE president so that you can attend this leadership conference in two years. I found it very enlightening, motivating and fun.

Networking has never been my strong point. I usually find myself in a small group of individuals who know each other. They share common experiences and their conversations are interesting but I have a hard time knowing how to participate. I usually find myself on the fringe -- just listening and feeling way out of my comfort zone.

The Leadership Conference was an interesting networking experience because the attendees were just the Chapter Presidents and chairpersons of the specialty groups -- each person was there without a group of friends. At most conferences, when I enter the room and try to find a seat at a round table, there will be a group of 4-6 friends and one or two open seats, or if there are a group of seats -- they are being 'saved' for groups of friends. At this conference -- there were no groups of friends -- we were each there alone -- which made it so much easier to begin conversations and include everyone at the table. I really enjoyed that aspect.

One of the most prominent messages seemed to be -- a call for nominations. Who is in the pipeline being mentored for leadership? Please step forward - self nomination is a great adventure. I'd like to hear from you.

Conflict of Interest

When I accepted the nomination for KCRADE president-elect, I was working in a hospital-based diabetes center. When I resigned that position and started my own business, there was a question about whether or not elected officers could be working in the industry of diabetes products (part of my business is supporting various providers of insulin pumps and speaking engagements for diabetes related companies) I checked with National AADE and the message I received stated:

"It is more to the point of disclosure rather than conflict. On the chapter level, the conflict of interest form is to make sure that you are not receiving payment/monies from companies as you represent an AADE Chapter."

The first section of the form states: "The burden of transparency requires that there be written disclosure of actual, potential and/or perceived conflicts of interest. In articulating this policy, it is not the intention of AADE to restrict the personal, professional, business or proprietary activities of AADE members."

POLICY
By accepting a role of leadership as a member of the Board of Directors, chairperson of a committee, task force or Specialty Practice Group (SPG), or Chapter President in AADE, you are agreeing to place the Association's interests above your own by disclosing any potential conflict or duality of interest that may arise during your term of office or appointment.

Types of interest that should be disclosed include employment, membership on the Board of other national diabetes organizations or associations, advisory or consultative arrangements, speaker bureaus, stock holdings, any material external compensation and grant/research support not otherwise disclosed. For the purposes of this policy, materiality is defined as compensation that amounts to $1000 or more per entity, per occurrence.

No member of the Board of Directors, chairperson of any of its committees, task forces or SPGs, of Chapter Presidents shall seek, nor shall he/she derive any personal profit or gain, directly or indirectly, to her/himself or her/his employer by reason of his or her participating with the AADE. All members of the Board, committee, task force and SPG chairs, and Chapter Presidents shall refrain from obtaining any list of clients for personal or private solicitation at any time during their term.

At the start of each official Board meeting, each director and officer shall disclose both in writing and orally any personal interest (as detailed above), which he or she may have and shall refrain from participation in any discussion, vote or other decision on such matter.

At the start of each year, all committee, task force and SPG chairs, and Chapter Presidents shall disclose in writing any interest they may have; at the start of each official Committee or SPG meeting, the chair shall disclose orally any change in the status of these interest. (This may include a change in employment, a consulting engagement, honorarium or stipend equal to $1000 or more per entity, per occurrence, an appointment to a board or committee of another organization, and the like.)

Disclosure Statement

I hereby certify that, at this time, I do not have any pending agreements with any vendor, supplier, or other party doing business with AADE which would result in compensation of $1000 or more per entity.

As a consultant for "Diabetes Education Consultants", I have in the past, and will in the future, receive(d) fees for speaker services, insulin pump training and/or other consultant services to the following companies:
Abbott
CCS
Roche
Liberty
Omni Pod
and others as opportunities arise

I am a volunteer on the ADA speakers bureau.

Welcome to the KCRADE Blog

One of my goals as the Chapter President is to keep the lines of communication open. In the past there have been e-mails that were sent but not received. If you check the blog every once in a while, you will be able to check the list of e-mails that were sent and confirm that you are receiving them.

In addition to that -- I am really trying to practice a 'listening leadership style'. It may be quite a challenge for me -- there is SO much I want to say :) I was working on the agenda for my first Executive Committee meeting and realized that the meeting was just not the format to share everything I had learned and discussed at the 2 day AADE Leadership conference. As I was flying home from the conference, I was reading one of the airline magazines. The article recommended that company leaders create a blog for communication. I've decided that what is good for a company leader might work for a Chapter leader as well.

Hope you enjoy the running commentary you will find here. Please let me know what you think.
